Ecuador to host first ever Women’s International Sevens in January

Ecuador is to play host to a Women’s International Rugby Sevens tournament for the first time ever in January 2016. The two-day tournament will take place in the country’s largest city, Guayaquil on January 15-16 at Parque Samanes.

Involved will be eight Ecuadorian women’s sides in addition to Jaguares RC from Peru and Colombian clubs Hidras, Cartagena, Buziracas and Cuervos Celtas. The twelve teams have been drawn into three pools of four.

The tournament came into being to attend to the contemporary demand for women’s rugby in Ecuador. With more opportunities promoting the development the initiative is, according to organizers, certain to encourage the growth of women’s rugby.

The tournament will be unique in being a women’ event with no men’s competition taking place. The fixtures for the opening day have been posted.
