Monaco and Dublin to host Olympic Qualifiers

The city-state of Monaco and Dublin, Ireland, will host the final Olympic Sevens qualification tournaments in June. World Rugby has set the dates for the men on June 18-19 at Stade Louis II and the women a week later on June 25-26 at the UCD Bowl.

Only the winning team in each bracket will go through to Rio, where the women are slated to take place from August 6-8 and the men immediately following from August 9-11. Hosts Brazil and the top four finishers on the 2014-15 HSBC Sevens Series qualified automatically, while six teams came from regional qualifiers contested between June and November.

A full complement of 16 teams will participate in each repechage event, including four Americas countries in each bracket: Canada, Chile, Mexico, and Uruguay for the men; Argentina, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, and Uruguay for the women.

Americas teams already qualified on the men’s side are hosts Brazil, CONSUR winners Argentina, and NACRA champions USA. Previously qualified women’s teams from the Americas include Brazil, HSBC Sevens Series runners-up Canada, CONSUR champions Columbia, and NACRA winners USA.

Canada are the highest-ranked men’s side from the 2014-15 HSBC Sevens Series yet to qualify, while Samoa are the highest on this season’s rankings after one event. Russia are the heavy favorites to qualify in the women’s bracket, having finished 7th on last year’s table and finishing in 2nd in Dubai.
