Costa Rica defeat El Salvador in South American C Championship

Looking to bounce back from an opening round defeat against Guatemala on Sunday, Los Guarias took on El Salvador on Wednesday evening in a second round match. The three countries and Panama are competing in the ongoing South American C Championship in San Salvador.

Costa Rica has greater tradition than the three other nations but as shown on Sunday upsets can happen. The loss against Guatemala meant today’s match against El Salvador was an elimination match as El Salvador went into it having won against Panama.

Such has been the growth throughout the region that Costa Rica’s dominance over such opposition in previous years is entirely absent in the 2015 competition. So much so that half way through facing El Salvador Los Guarias held a one point lead of 15-14.

The evenly-disputed opening half had the home side believing they could make it two wins from two matches but Costa Rica dug deep to keep Los Torogoces scoreless in the second half. In scoring eleven additional points Los Guarias completed a 26-14 win.

Earlier in the day Guatemala had taken-on and comfortably beaten Panama to sit in first place of the competition. The final round will be played on Saturday with Costa Rica taking on Panama and Guatemala facing El Salvador in the tournament decider.
