Chile to face Brazil in Santiago

The governing body of Chilean rugby, FERUCHI have announced the dates and cities for the inaugural Americas Rugby Championship, to be played in February and March 2016. The new competition will bring together countries from North and South America to compete in an annual competition similar to the traditional Six Nations Championship played in Europe.

Competing will be Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Uruguay and the USA. The six counties will play against each-other over consecutive weekends in February and March while the unions are to play under the banner of the Asociación de Rugby Panamericana (Pan American Rubgy Association – PARA).

PARA President Agustín Pichot declared “we are very happy to be able to announce the inauguration of the Americas Rugby Championship, which will be celebrated next year. This would not have been possibel without the cooperation of the six unions”.

“We would also like to thank  World Rugby for their support. This is a very emotional moment for the Americas and it is our first ever tournament at international level. This is how rugby will continue to grow and prosper in our region.”

The FERUCHI press release also confirmed where all five of Chile’s matches in the tournament are to be played. Los Condores will open at home against Brazil on February 06 or 07. The same weekend will see Canada hosting Uruguay in Victoria, British Columbia and the USA taking-on Argentina in Houston, Texas.

Los Condores will play away to neighbors Argentina at a yet to be confirmed location and will then fly to Florida to face the USA in the third round. Chile will return home to face Uruguay and Canada in the final two rounds. Curiously all matches in the final two rounds will be played in South America.

An official announcement will be made in due course confirming the locations of the home matches against Uruguay and Canada. The fixture against the USA will be the first since 2002, a year in which Los Condores defeated the Eagles.
