Uruguay Confirm Americas Six Nations Calendar

URU President Sebastián Piñeyrúa has confirmed Uruguay’s international program for the inaugural Americas Rugby Cup (Americas Six Nations) competition. Set to be played in February and March Uruguay will join fellow Rugby World Cup 2015 competitors Argentina, Canada, the USA in addition to Brazil and Chile in a new, annual tournament.

The initiative seeks to provide greater international competition to those involved while also acting to bring in a greater financial return to all involved. In the case of Uruguay the matches are to be broadcast by ESPN.

Piñeyrúa confirmed that Uruguay will play Canada away in the opening round of the competition. Scheduled for February 06 2016, the match will be played in Victoria, British Columbia and is to be the only game for Los Teros in North America.

In round two Los Teros will play against Brazil, also away. The venue for this match is yet to be made official however the CBRu has confirmed that it will be played in the southern most Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.

After two away matches Uruguay will play host to tournament favorites, Argentina on February 20 and will also play at home against the USA in round five on March 05. In between these fixtures Los Teros will play away against Chile on February 27.

Piñeyrúa told El Observador that “they are matches for World Rankings. They are to be played under regulation 9 of World Rugby, and because of this all countries are able to select their players from (foreign) clubs“.

The head of the URU is confident about what lies ahead with the competition offering the unions with the means of economic longevity though enhanced permanent relations.”We intend on being self-sufficient starting from the first year, and we are optimistic that we will be able to achieve this“.

No official word was given as to where Uruguay will play against Argentina and the USA. Americas Rugby News nonetheless can confirm that it was previously told that the Estadio Charrúa in Montevideo will almost certainly be used for home matches.
