‘Get into Rugby’ aids rugby popularity in Colombia

The World Rugby’s Get into Rugby program has encouraged an increasing number of children and teenagers to play the sport of rugby. By working with the community the sport is gaining ground in the country and the level of rugby being played is also developing.

Involved in the initiative are Colombia’s test players who have helped by volunteering as coaches, referees or to provide general assistance. Their involvement enables the youth involved to connect greatly with the national team, Los Tucanes.

Colombia will have an opportunity to test themselves against an established South American A nation, Brazil. The teams are to meet in a test match in São Paulo in December. In years gone by Brazil has been superior but ongoing growth should enable Colombia to challenge the Tupis to a greater extent.

In Colombia the Get into Rugby initiative began in 2013 and has  introduced rugby to 29,196 boys, 17,124 girls and 46,320 participantes in total. In Sudamérica Rugby territory more than 255,800 people have been involved since January 2015. Of the participants 36% are girls.

On a global scale more than one million have participated in 2015 with the average participation of girls being 37%.
