A total of seventeen Pumas scored tries at Rugby World Cup 2015. Of them Juan Imhoff led the way by crossing five times while winger Santiago Cordero was next best with three. In total 27 tries were scored and World Rugby has identified the five of them which are deemed to have been the best.
At number five World Rugby has selected Julián Montoya’s try from a set-move against Tonga. The replacement hooker combined with Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe to cross in the right corner and did so with his foot mere inches off the ground over the touch line.
One better was Matías Moroni’s solo effort against Namibia in Argentina’s fourth and final pool match. Like against Tonga the match was again played in Leicester. Good body position saw Moroni evade multiple defenders to cross from 30 metres out.
Fullback Joaquín Tuculet comes in at number three for his score against Tonga. Tuculet ran in support of prop Ramiro Herrera to finish off a well-worked try that started well within Argentina’s own half.
In at number two is Imhoff for his try against Tonga. The score saw Diego Maradona overwhelmed with joy. It was a team try which was started by Cordero who gathered a kick-off and kept the ball in hand by running it back rather than kicking. Like lightening the South Americans scored a well-taken try.
Cordero, himself, could not stay off the list and, in fact, comes in at number one. Both his tries against Georgia were wonderful but it was his try from a set-move lineout which World Rugby deems to have been Argentina’s best score of the tournament.
The top three underline the strength of Argentina’s back-three which were among the best of any competitors at the World Cup.
