Denver Set to Announce Pro Rugby Team

Following the announcement from Douglas Schoninger — CEO of PRO Rugby — that Sacramento, California, will be home to one of the six inaugural season teams there is a lot of speculation as to where the remaining five will be based.

Many have indeed narrowed down the remaining five to include New York, Philadelphia, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Denver. On the outer is Houston though this is also said to be changing in 2017 when Canada may also join with both Toronto and Houston having been brought up.

The Denver Business Journal has reported that the Mile High City is set to join Sacramento to become the second official Pro Rugby team. A spokesman for PRO Rugby told the Denver Business Journal that  although Denver has not been officially announced as a PRO Rugby city it soon will be.

Also revealed is that PRO Rugby is not yet ready to release the details of Denver’s team. It is expected that not only Denver but also other teams are to be made official as early as next week.

Located close to USA Rugby’s headquarters in Boulder, Colorado Denver has a notable list of USA Eagles home matches. Infinity Park hosted tests against Canada, Georgia and Russia from 2010-2012. It could potentially act as the Pro Rugby team’s home ground as could Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City which hosted Georgia in 2009.
