Argentine Budget to Rise from 100 to 250 million Pesos

In 2016 the UAR is to increase the annual budget from 100 million Argentine Pesos to 250 million. Argentine newspaper Clarin confirmed the increase which has come about due to the union now having 15 major sponsors and receiving previouosly unheard of profits from the broadcasting of matches involving Los Pumas and Los Jaguares in addition to being involved in other tournaments.

The increases underline the growing economic power of Argentine rugby which has exploded following the country joining the Rugby Championship in 2012. The 2016 increase will see Los Jaguares generating between US$5 and 6 million per year. President Carlos Araujo believes that “we are optimistic with what is to come starting next year because we will have 30 matches per year for Los Pumas and the franchise”.

What has also aided Argentine rugby greatly is the country itself. Araujo commented that “the provincial governments such as Salta, Mendoza and Buenos Aires also accompany us because having Los Pumas is much more effective than any marketing campaign”.
