Stade Français and Italy number 8 and captain Sergio Parisse is one of three finalists for the prestigious Top 14 player of the season award. Born in Argentina Parisse learned his rugby playing in La Plata before moving with his family to Italy as a teenager and beginning his professional career shortly thereafter.
Now aged 32 Parisse has been playing for the Parisian club since 2007 and has won Top 14 titles in 2007 and 2015. This year’s title saw him playing at the top of his game to enter World Cup preparation in fine form but, unfortunately, for Italy’s campaign his game time at the World Cup was limited to one match.
Joining Parisse as the remaining two finalists are Australian Matt Giteau and former England fullback Nick Abendanon. Giteau backed-up an impressive season with Toulon by starring in the World Cup for Australia and, in doing so, passing the 100 cap mark. Clermont’s Abendanon was not selected for England due to the country’s policy on restricting eligibility to those playing in the Aviva Premiership.
The winner of the award will be announced at the upcoming Nuit du Rugby. To take place on November 23 the ceremony will award players, coaches and teams for their achievements during the 2014-2015 French rugby season.
