Rugby’s Asian powerhouse Japan will play in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The Japanese secured qualification today by defeating Hong Kong 24-10 in the final of the Asia Rugby Sevens Qualifier.
Japan’s path to qualification involved defeating Chinese Taipei, Singapore, China and South Korea in pool play and doing so in dominant fashion with only China scoring points.
In the Cup Semi Finals Japan overcame Sri Lanka 43-0 to set up a final against Hong Kong. The final did not initially go to script as Hong Kong opened up a 10-0 lead which they held at the interval. Two late tries from Katsuyki Sahai saw Japan book their spot in the Olympic Games.
