São José Crowned Brazilian Champions

The Rugby World Cup Final was not the only final disputed on Saturday. In Brazil the national champion was also crowned with São José Rugby defeating Curitiba in the Super 8 decider at the Estádio do Ibirapura.

Broadcast live on Brazilian television the team from the city of São José dos Campos ended a three-year drought to defeat the 2014 champions 18-6 to win their ninth national title.

São José started the stronger with quick play leading to the opening try in just the 2nd minute. Scored by Pelo Moisés added the extras to go 7-0 ahead.

Curitiba responded well to the early setback as solid work through the forwards gave the Argentine fly half Facundo the opportunity to land a 14th minute drop goal, his first of two in the match. His second, three minutes later made it a 7-6 game.

Feeling drop goal fever Facundo attempted a third kick which was off the mark and with pressure turned onto Curitiba Francisco was yellow carded in the 21st minute which Moisés converted into three points, giving Sâo José a 10-6 advantage which is how it would remain until half time.

São José opened the second half with an additional Moisés penalty. The 47th minute score had the São Paulo state side in form control. Facundo looked to narrow the deficit with another attempted drop goal but it missed and, shortly thereafter, his team was down to 14 men again with Stéfano this time being the infringing player.

Curutiba mounted a late challenge to win and went over for a disallowed try in the 76th minute. It was the final opportunity for the Bulls and Moisés added the final points through a final minute penalty to wrap-up a 12 point win.

Post match Moisés was awarded the Player of the Year award. He is well placed to be selected for Brazil who are to receive Germany for a two-match tour this month. The series is to be the first of its kind and will enable both countries to prepare for 2016 international competition.
