France’s 32-10 win over Italy last night in London came at a cost with right winger Yoann Huget suffering a severe knee injury which has ended his World Cup. The Toulouse flier went down hurt in the second half holding his knee and had to be carried off the field. Tests have shown that he ruptured his ligament.
It comes just three days before France’s second match of the tournament, against Romania in London. Head Coach Phillipe Saint-André will be able to name a replacement but this player will not be entitled to start against the Oaks.
Saint-André’s back-up Fullback Brice Dulin may now move to the wing against Romania due to his roster having contained just three wingers – Huget, Noa Nakaitaci and Sofiane Guitoune. Alternatively Nakaitaci and Guitoune could start joining Scott Spedding in the back-three.
There are a number of players to call-upon to replace Huget on the roster with Teddy Thomas being the number one contender but far from guaranteed. Among the alternatives are Racing 92 wingers Marc Andreu and Adrien Planté, Toulouse’s Maxime Médard, Castres wingers Romain Martial and Rémy Grosso, new Toulon recruit Julien Caminati, Montpellier’s Benjamin Fall or Hugo Bonneval of Stade Français.
