McCoy Returns to USA Women’s 7s Helm

Former USA Eagle standout Julie McCoy has returned to the helm of the Women’s 7s team as the program prepares for the upcoming 2016 Olympic Games. USA Rugby announced today that McCoy, who was the team’s Head Coach from 2006-2009, has been named Head Coach of the program.

McCoy is well regarded in the American Rugby community having served in a number of player development and high performance roles over the years. After leaving her post as Head Coach of the program in 2009 McCoy went on to help found the American Rugby Pro Training Center in Arkansas. The ARPTC was the first Women’s-specific National Development Academy in the USA.

McCoy’s last run as the Head Coach of the Women’s 7s side included three wins at the USA 7’s, a win at the Dubai 7s, and a win at the Hong Kong 7s.

The USA Women’s 7s team qualified for the 2016 Olympics with a win at the NACRA Championships in June. The squad finished 5th on the Women’s World Series and just outside of automatic qualification. In recent years, the USA Women’s program, once thought to be a safe bet to medal in 2016, has fallen off the pace from the likes of New Zealand, Australia, and most importantly their rivals Canada.

The Women’s side has a lot of ground to gain in the coming months with the Rio Olympics less than a year away.
