Sergio Parisse in doubt for World Cup

Welsh rugby is in mourning following the loss of Leigh Halfpenny and Rhys Webb from the Rugby World Cup. The nation’s home match against Italy on Saturday saw both first choice players stretchered off in what was a massive blow to Welsh changes and to the tournament itself.

Also hurt in the match was Italian captain Sergio Parisse. The 113 time capped 31 year old underwent surgery this morning to drain a hematoma in his left calf. His status in the World Cup is to be determined over the coming days.

Parisse has previously played in three Rugby World Cups and remains young enough and good enough to dream of playing in Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan. The Italian back-rower was born in La Plata, Argentina and began playing in the country before moving to Italy with his family in his teens.

Italy are pooled with Canada, France, Ireland and Romania and open against France at London’s Twickenham Stadium on Saturday September 19.
