Legendary USA Eagle flanker Todd Clever has been called into the Barbarians side that is set to take on the Worcester Warriors this coming Saturday. After serving as Captain of the USA for a number of years and amassing 63 caps for the Eagles, Clever was dropped from the team by Head Coach Mike Tolkin this Summer amidst controversy. After being left out of the Eagles’ roster for the Summer test matches, Clever missed out on an opportunity to challenge for a roster spot at his fourth World Cup.
The Barbarians call up comes at a great time for Clever, who is in need of a platform to show he can still perform at a high level. After spending the last six seasons playing in Japan, Clever has not been on contract since Spring and has been playing both 15s and 7s for Old Mission Bay Athletic Club.
Clever joins a star-studded Barbarians side that recently toppled Samoa at the new London Olympic Stadium. The Baa-baas forward pack is especially loaded with Internationals Pierre Spies (South Africa), Ali Williams (New Zealand), Carl Hayman (New Zealand), Adam Thompson (New Zealand), Eusebio Guinazu (Argentina), Allister Hogg (Scotland), and Benn Robinson (Australia) among many others anchoring the pack.
