Los Teros Head Coach Pablo Lemoine has announced Uruguay’s 31 players who will compete at the upcoming Rugby World Cup in England and Wales. The players named are the same 31 men who traveled to Japan to play test matches in Fukuoka and Tokyo against the Asian champions.
30 year old Second-rower Santiago Vilaseca who has won 32 caps for Uruguay has been named as captain. He is to lead a team with an average age of 26,5. He is joined by veteran props Carlos Arboleya and Alejo Corral as the seniors on the roster. No player, however, was involved in Uruguay’s last Rugby World Cup campaign twelve years ago in Australia.
Castres second-rower and 2013 Top 14 champion Rodrigo Capo Ortega will play no part in the tournament, preferring to support his pregnant wife.
26 year old Diego Magno, who recently spoke with Americas Rugby news is Uruguay’s most capped player having earned 48 caps over a seven year period dating back to 2008. He debuted at the age of 19.
The roster is heavily based on Montevideo club players with a total of 26 playing their rugby in Uruguay. Those based aborad are Alejo Corral (SIC), Felipe Berchesi (Carcassonne), Agustin Ormaechea (Mont de Marsan), Mario Sagario (Massy) and Gaston Mieres (Valpollicella).
Although no player is returning from Rugby World Cup 2003 Head Coach Paul Lemoine featured in the tournament as did forwards coach Juan Carlos Bado, who also played in Wales 1999 and backs coach Emiliano Caffera who featured in Australia 2003.
Uruguay will play in Group A, the Pool of Death. Opposition sides include Wales, Australia, Fiji and England. Los Teros will debut against Wales at the Millennium Stadium on Sunday September 20. Kicki-off is scheduled for 14:30 local time or 10:30am Uruguayan time. Uruguay will next face Australia followed by Fiji and England.
