Brazilian Women win Plate Final in Ireland

Brazil’s national women’s Rugby Sevens team haqd a successful weekend in Ireland where, on Sunday, they won the Plate Final of a qualifying competition for the World Rugby Women’s Rugby Sevens Circuit.

Competing were teams from the world over with Brazil being joined by Colombia and Mexico are representatives of the Americas.

Brazil’s campaign began with a match against eventual winners, Japan. The Asians played well to complete a 19-10 victory. Brazil bounced back with a 42-05 hammering of Samoa before losing the third and final group match, 17-0 against Wales.

Brazil advanced to the Quarter Finals as the best third placed team from the pool phase and faced Holland, losing 12-10. It sent Brazil into the Plate division and the 2016 Olympic Games hosts saw off Wales 10-05 to advance to the final and defeat Hong Kong 17-0.

Brazil’s Plate victory meant the team finished fifth overall. Japan and Ireland, meanwhile, joined Australia, Canada, England, Fiji, France, New Zealand, Russia, Spain and the USA in qualifying for the Women’s World Circuit. The 12th and final spot will be determined by invitation.
