Anton Petrowitsch to play Pro rugby in Spain

20 year old Chilean international Anton Petrowitsch has signed a professional contract to play for Guernika RT in Spain. He joins Simón Pardakhty, Ramón Ayarza, Pablo Huete, Leonardo Montoya, Francisco Deformes as part of the ‘Chilean Forces‘ playing in Europe.

Capped four times by Los Condores Petrowitsch His four test caps were all in the 2014 South American Championship where he played once against each of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. He moves to Europe with experience from playing for Sumner in Christchurch, New Zealand.

All his caps were won playing number 8 but Petrowitsch played both in the back-row and second-row while at Sumner. His time in the rugby stronghold was a case in point of Chileans looking abroad to gain vital experience and grow as players.

His professional contract with Guernika Rugby Taldea will see him playing in Spain’s División de Honor A but he views it as having his foot in the door with future opportunities possible resulting. Indeed Petrowitsch believes that due to Europe’s size, with France next to Spain, it is possible to rise up the ladder. Doing so is no easy task but in playing in Spain there is a window of opportunity which was previous nonexistent.

He will be playing in Spain until the completion of the 2015-2016 Spanish season in April-May. The move came about through TCM Sports and Edmundo Olfos who Petrowitsch knows through his involvement in Rugby Sevens. Olfos is the founder of TCM sports which is an academy and management which is heavily involved in growing rugby in Chile.

Petrowitsch told Americas Rugby News “I’m very happy I made this jump into Europe to develop my rugby and help make chilean rugby grow”.
