Denver wins SEREVI Rugbytown 7s

One of the emerging sub-international 7s tournaments of the past few years has been the SEREVI Rugbytown 7s held at Infinity Park in Glendale, Colorado. The tournament, which just completed it’s 4th year of competition, is ever improving in the quality of teams that are in the field and has produced some very exciting rugby in the last few years. This past weekend 17 teams from throughout the USA and NACRA region made the tip to Colorado for a weekend of thrilling rugby.

The quality of play at the tournament was highlighted by the fact that all three of the National teams that came to the tournament (Mexico, Bermuda, Bahamas) were all winless during pool play.

In the end, Denver reigned supreme claiming the 2015 SEREVI Rugbytown 7s title. Denver was a perfect 6-0 on the weekend and capped it with a 28-24 win over the SEREVI Selects in the Championship match.

Pool A: Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard

Pool A served a side purpose as seeding for the annual Armed Forces Championship. Army swept the pool with Air Force coming in second in the pool. Army outscored their pool opponents 119-29, but had a couple close calls against Navy and the Air Force.

Pool B: Upright Rugby Rogues (Canada), Glendale Raptors, Stars Rugby 7s, Bermuda National Team

The Rogues swept Pool B, but had competitive matches against Glendale and Bermuda. Glendale came in second in the pool advancing to the quarterfinals.

Pool C: Denver, Atlantis, Northeast Academy, Mexico National Team

Denver kicked off their title run with a perfect run through a tough pool. Northeast Academy edged out Atlantic 20-17 in pool play which was the deciding factor in their advancing to the quarterfinals.

Pool D: SEREVI Selects, Negro y Azul, Collegiate All-Americans, Bahamas National Team

Coming into the tournament as one of the teams to beat, SEREVI did little to dispel that line of thought as they rolled through the pool outscoring their opponents 100-26. Negro y Azul gave SEREVI a scare on their way to finishing second in the pool and advancing to the quarters. The Collegiate All-Americans, who are two-time tournament champs, were relegated to the Bowl with two lopsided losses to SEREVI and Negro y Azul.
