Cubelli set to join Brumbies

Pumas star Tomás Cubelli looks likely to be joining the Brumbies for the 2016 Super Rugby season. The Australian franchise is looking for a replacement for Nic White, who is departing to join Jake White’s Montpellier team in the French Top 14. Cubelli signed a two-year contract with the UAR earlier this year but it appears the union will give him their blessing, at least for one season.

Argentina had previously announced their intention to keep their senior players local, and have stated that they will not consider overseas players for the Pumas, but look set to make an exception for Cubelli. It’s unclear if this precedent will be extended to any other players.

The 25-year-old scrumhalf has won 36 caps for his country his making his test debut in 2010, sharing the first choice honours with Martín Landajo since the duo overtook Nicolás Vergallo in the pecking order following the 2011 World Cup.

Cubelli has also made three appearances for the Barbarians, including a start against Australia this past November. He has not played professionally overseas despite several previous offers, choosing instead to stay in Argentina and play for the Pampas in the Vodacom Cup, the Jaguars in the Pacific Challange and Americas Rugby Cup, and his home club of Belgrano in the URBA Top 14.
