Aramburú’s unforgettable World Cup try in Paris

Argentina’s path to third place in Rugby World Cup 2007 involved wins over France, Georgia, Namibia, Ireland and Scotland. A semi Final loss against South America eliminated the devastated Pumas  but all was not lost as the Agustín Pichot captained side looked to finish on a high against France in the Bronze Final.

For many it was a match against friends. Such was the size of the contingent of Pumas in the Top 14 that eleven of the starters had been contracted to French clubs and the additional four would go on to be contracted in subsequent seasons. Under contract with Perpignan at the time were Rimas Alvarez Kairelis and Federico Martín Aramburú who combined for what was arguably Argentina’s best try of the tournament.

Following a break from fullback Ignacio Corleto the ball went through the hands of Manuel Contepomi , Patricio Albacete and Juan Martín Hernández who passed long and accurately to Alvares Kairelis who drew the remaining defenders to feed Aramburú in the corner.

The try was the second of two for Aramburú who also scored the bonus point sealing try against Georgia in Lyon. His international career included 22 caps from 2004-2009. While he was at Biarritz the club won the Top 14 in 2005 and 2006. He went on to captain both Dax and Glasgow.
