Berchesi joins Los Teros from France

Capped 12 times by Uruguay Berchesi is one of Uruguay’s leading players. In matches with Berchesi as the starting fly half Uruguay have a record of six wins, four losses and one draw. His valuable contrbution of 42 points in the home and away repechage series against Russia ultimately saw Los Teros qualifying for Rugby World Cup 2015 to be the only different country to the twenty from New Zealand 2011.

Berchesi emerged at the right time, debuting at international level in November 2011 against Portugal in Caldas da Rainha. Also on debut was Agustín Ormaechea who is likely to form a halves combination with Berchesi at the World Cup.

Facing Rugby World Cup 2007 participants Portugal for the second time Berchesi was again a part of a winning effort. The June 2012 test would be his last until November 2013 when Uruguay defeated Spain 16-15 in Montevideo. That result was arguably the turning point in Uruguay’s quest to qualify for a first Rugby World Cup since Australia 2003.

Berchesi kicked Uruguay to a 27-27 draw against the USA in his next test, an Americas final round Rugby World Cup Cup qualifier in Montevideo. While the North Americans secured qualification in the return match in Atlanta Uruguay had proven to be a stronger team than during the previous campaign.

With Berchesi organizing play well and kicking with accuracy from fly half the South Americans completed qualification against Hong Kong and Russia. He would, however, not be a part of the 2015 test matches against Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Georgia and Paraguay but is now back training with Los Teros who are into the final stages of preparation before departing, firstly for Japan, next month.

Aged 24 Berchesi will return to France after the World Cup to begin his contract with Pro d2 club Carcassonne. This past season he played for Chambéry in the Fédérale 1 and previously he played for Badia in Italy.
