Tiger Rolls in Cancun

Tiger Rugby made the trip south to Cancun, Mexico this past weekend to play in the Cancun Sevens. Played at the El Rey Polo Country Club, the Cancun Sevens has been in existence since 2008. The tournament brings in sides from all over the world to compete in a weekend of highly competitive rugby.

This year’s edition of the tournament saw teams from six different countries in play in the Men’s and Women’s Divisions. Blackheath (England), Tiger (USA), Negro y Azul (USA), and RIPA (Canada) joined a number of Mexican based sides in the Men’s Division. In the Women’s Division Tiger, Blackheath, Costa Rica National Team, and the Colombian National Team took part alongside their Mexican competition that included Select Side Serpientes.

Tiger Rugby stole the show, making a clean sweep by winning the Championships in both the Men’s and Women’s Division. Scores have been difficult to find, but reports suggest that the Men’s final between Tiger and Negro y Azul, an elite side from Texas, was befitting a championship match.

The titles mark the second year in a row that Tiger has won both divisions at the Cancun Sevens.

Tiger Rugby is an Olympic Development Academy for USA Rugby and participates annually at events all over the globe. In recent years, Tiger has produced a number of USA 7s players, both Men and Women, including this year’s breakout star Perry Baker.
