Copacabana Beach gets Rugby Field

The world’s most famous beach, Copacabana is to get it’s own beach rugby field. A joint effort between the Confederação Brasileira de Rugby (CBRu) and World Rugby is to officially launch this coming Wednesday (June 24) at 9:30am a rugby field at Copacabana.

The field will be on the sand and come complete with rugby goal posts in front of Avenida Atlântica. The instalation is to be in place until at least the 2016 Olympic Games which are to mark the return of rugby as an Olympic sport for the first time in 92 years.

The event is to involve the presense of Brazilian men’s and women’s Rugby Sevens players in addition to coaches. Also present will be World Rugby CEO Brett Gosper and Chairman Bernard Lapasset as will CBRu CEO Agustín Danza and President Samu Arap Sobrinho.

Following the launch a friendly match will be played featuring Brazilian players. Later on in the afternoon the project Impact Beyond will be launched. With the objective of putting rugby into 1,000 Rio de Janeiro state schools Impact Beyond is one of the biggest legacy movements of the 2016 Olympic Games that is to take place in the host city.

The clinic which will involve close to 500 children will take place at the zona militar de Deodoro which is where the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games Rugby Sevens will also be played.
