Uruguay go down to Emerging Ireland in Tbilisi Cup

Los Teros lost 33-7 this afternoon against Ireland ‘A’. Known as Emerging Ireland, the second-string Irish test side is providing players with opportunities at pressing for senior squad involvement in this year’s Rugby World Cup.

After a first half in which the Europeans dominated, and led 26-0 at the interval, the South American team performed notably in the second half. Los Teros overpowered the Irish at scrums and played the majority of the half in Irish territory, eventually scoring a penalty try in the process.

Unlike Uruguay the Emerging Ireland team is 100% professional and has many players who are regulars in the Guinness Pro 12, the Celtic-Italian League which includes four Irish teams, two Italians, two Scottish and four Welsh.

Ireland started the match with fast pace and scored three tries in the opening fifteen minutes. The velocity in which the Irish played led to Uruguayan disciplinary problems thus aiding Ireland’s early inroads.

The match changed in the second half with Uruguay playing like a different team. Not only were the forwards able to outperform the Emerging Ireland scrum but the defense also proved much harded to penetrate and Los Teros were competitive at the breakdown. Moreover, Uruguay’s backs looked dangerous at times and suggests that further work ahead of the World Cup could see the team continue to progress.

Awaiting Uruguay now is a third and final round Tbilisi Cup round which will be played this coming Sunday. Uruguay will face Italia Emergenti (Emerging Italy) Kick-off is scheduled for 10am Uruguayan time.  It is to be streamed live and will be available at the following link: http://rugbyge.tulix.tv/
