Argentina and Uruguay Set for Olympic Qualification Showdown

A second undefeated day at the CONSUR Sevens in Santa Fé, Argentina saw the home team move to within one win of qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. With one day remaining the Argentine men require a win over Uruguay to secure qualification.

The two Rugby World Cup 2015 competitors are the only undefeated males teams after two days of the Olympic Games qualifying seris at club C.R.A.I in Santa Fé. Their meeting on Sunday will determine who qualifies directly for the Olympic Games with the unsuccessful team likely to be joined by Chile in entering the global repecharge tournament whose winner will claim the final spot at the 2016 Olympics.

Argentina’s performances on Saturday were demonstrative of the country’s reputation in the region.  In the first fixture Argentina completed a 64-0 win over Peru which featured ten tries. Axel Muller led the way in scoring three and was supported by Santiago Cordero and the Super Rugby contracted Jerónimo De la Fuente who both scored twice.

Both Muller and De la Fuente also crossed against Colombia in what was a 61-0. Featuring a total of nine tries Argentina’s quest to compete for a medal at the Olympic Games came close to being a reality. Sunday’s opponent, Uruguay achieved a 40-5  win over Paraguay in addition to a 24-12 victory against Colombia.
