Uruguay Choose for Olympic Qualifiers

Uruguay is very much dreaming of playing Rugby Sevens at the Olympic Games. Men’s and women’s squads from the eastern South American republic will take part in this weekend’s qualifying tournament at Club C.R.A.I in Santa Fé, Argentina and do so looking to earn the right to compete at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

The three-day tournament will be played from Friday to Sunday with all competing teams in the men’s and women’s division facing all opponents. The top teams from both divisions upon completion of the competition will qualify directly for Rio de Janeiro while the runners-up and the third places sides will have one last shot via a global repecharge tournament featuring runner-up from other regions.

The qualifying is to feature eight countries – Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. Of them all expect Costa Rica will field teams in both divisions. Costa Rica will only participate in the women’s qualifiers. The sucessful qualifiers will join the host nation Brazil in representing South America at the Olympic Games.
