van der Merwe scores in Pro 12 final

Glasgow Warriors are the 2015 Guinness Pro 12 Champions. The team defeated Munster this weekend to record a first ever professional championship title for both the team and for Scotland. Since the creation of the now Celtic-Italian League in the 2001-2002 season Irish teams have won eight titles and Welsh teams five. The comprehensive victory saw the Scottish side outscoring the Irish by five tries to two and a Canadian was among the scorers. Both teams in the final had players from the Americas in their starting lineups and these players are targeting places in this year’s Rugby World Cup.

The final was far from being an epic encounter. Such was the impressive opening half from the Glasgow Warriors that Munster had a steep uphill battle to make a match out of the second forty. Munster cut the 21-10 gap with a penalty to open the second half scoring before Glasgow scored a try soon thereafter and subsequently broke well clear to complete a 31-13 championship securing title.

The three powers of the Americas all had a player starting the match. Canadian DTH van der Merwe played on the left wing for the Glasgow Warriors and crossed for the second try of the game. He was joined on the opposite wing by Tommy Seymour who was born in Tennessee, USA, but plays for Scotland. Both players are certainties for the World Cup while a question mark remains over Munster hooker Eusebio Guiñazú (pictured above) who has not played for Argentina since 2013.
