The Utah Warriors have moved to strengthen their front row with the addition of Uruguay hooker Germán Kessler. As reported by El Observador journalist Ignacio Chans, he is now awaiting visa clearance to join the team for the rest of the Major League Rugby season.
Kessler, 24, is considered by most to be among the best at his position in the Americas. He started all five matches during the Americas Rugby Championship and is now just five short of 50, having made his debut in 2015. He was part of Uruguay’s team at the 2015 World Cup.
It’s the second South American signing from the Warriors in recent days. The first was Brazilian flanker Arthur Bergo, who joined previously-signed Josh Reeves at the club following their ARC commitments.
The total number of Teros on MLR contracts is now at 11, with the total number of South American internationals in MLR now 15. Austin Elite pair Sebastián Kalm and Juan Pablo Aguirre were capped at age-grade level for Chile and Argentina respectively but remain eligible for the USA on residency.
Americas Rugby News has confirmed that at least three further South American players are currently in talks with MLR clubs.
