Sudamérica Rugby Sevens to open 2018

The Sudamérica Rugby Sevens is to open 2018. With 2018 being Rugby Sevens World Cup year the two legs of the South American Sevens circuit are to be critical for all involved. San Francisco, California is to host the World Cup.

Sudamérica Rugby has increased the Sudamérica Rugby Sevens to 12 teams. This includes expanding to include competitors from different regions. With it a higher level of competition is expected.

The first leg of the series will be the Seven de Punta del Este with the Seven de Reñaca in Chile being the second. The Estadio Campus de Maldonado in Punta del Este and Colegio Mackay in Viña del Mar will host the respective tournaments.

The tournaments are to take place on consecutive weekends. The Punta del Este event will be played on January 6-7 while the Viña del Mar competition will have games played on January 13-14.

Taking part from South America will be Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Paraguay. The Paraguayans booked their place based on being the highest finisher out of Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela at the Juegos Bolivarianos, played last month in Santa Marta, Colombia.

On the line for the South American teams will be places in San Francisco. Competing will be all expect for Argentina as Los Pumas 7’s have already qualified. The best two, Argentina aside, will qualify. The same is true for the 2018 Hong Kong Sevens while one spot is on the line for both the Las Vegas 7’s and Vancouver 7’s tournaments.

Additional countries traveling to play in Uruguay and Chile include Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, South Africa and the USA.
