The men and women who will represent Kenya at the 2016 Olympic Games are now known. The Kenya Rugby Union confirmed the 12 male and 12 female athletes who will compete for Gold in Brazil’s second largest city next month.
Men’s Head Coach Benjamin Ayimba has named Andrew Amonde as his captain. Amonde also led the Simbas 7’s side in their historic title win in the Singapore Sevens in April. All six additional starters from the side that defeated Fiji in the final will play in Rio. One of them is Collins Injera, the all-time leading try scorer on the international circuit.
Meanwhile Kenya’s Women’s 7’s Head Coach Mike Shamiah has chosen Catherine Abilla as his captain. Abilla will have Janet Okello provide cover as her assistant captain.
The Kenyan women’s team did not earn the right to participate by winning the African qualifiers. Instead South Africa decided not to send a women’s team to Rio which opened the door to Kenya who were the next in line.
