Mackenzie signs for PRO San Diego

Phil Mackenzie is the latest international to sign with PRO Rugby. The Canadian wing or centre will line up for the San Diego franchise, having been granted an early release from his contract with club Sale Sharks in the Aviva Premiership. Mackenzie becomes the first Canadian to officially join the league, though a handful of others have been strongly hinted to be included in the new professional competition. He is the second player from the Americas Rugby Championship named, following US Eagles scrumhalf Tom Bliss.

The 29-year-old has won 32 caps for his country since his debut in 2008, and participated in both the 2011 and 2015 World Cups. Mackenzie joined Sale ahead of the 2013-14 season from London Welsh, but has not played a Premiership game since December 2013 due to injury and the presence of several young English players at the club. Prior to his season with the Exiles, he spent two years with RFU Championship team Esher and one with Coventry.
