Second PRO Rugby Team Confirmed for California

Northern Californians are to be treated to two options as both Sacramento and San Francisco will have professional teams in PRO Rugby, the new North American professional rugby competition set to begin in April 2016.

With both cities having been confirmed as having PRO Rugby teams only four cities remain for the inaugural season. It is widely speculated that the locations of these teams will be Denver, Salt Lake City, New York and Philadelphia.

By working together with the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department, the San Francisco team will play PRO Rugby matches at Boxer Stadium in Balboa Park. The 3,500 capacity venue has hosted rugby in the past.

The growth of the game combined with the hosting of the 2018 Rugby Sevens World Cup mean that the historic contribution of the Bay Area is a natural fitting to PRO Rugby. The club has been home to big-name USA Eagles players including the all-time most capped player Mike MacDonald and today’s most famous North American rugby player, Samu Manoa.

Many other prominent USA players of the past and present have come through teams such as San Francisco Golden Gate and the California Golden Bears in the Bay Area. Future opportunities to invest into their development will be certain to have positive results for the USA Eagles.

More teams are reported to be announced this coming week and work is already underway to attract qualified staff with coaching positions already available. Applications can be made now by clicking here.
